โจ My Story: The Night the Lights Came On
December 2008 - A Moment That Changed Everything
"December 2008 is a time that would stay with me forever. My part of town for the first time had access to electricity and I could now brighten a room safely and instantaneously without the need for candles or fire lamps. This realization made me intrigued about the vast capabilities out there in the world. It felt as though I had discovered the world..."
That magical evening, just about a week before Christmas, changed my life forever. When the switch flipped and darkness turned to light across my neighborhood, I felt like I was witnessing pure magic. My little brain was completely blown away by this incredible technology that people in other parts of the world had been enjoying for decades.
Before that moment, my primary interest had been in mechanics. But it switched to electrical engineering almost as quickly as the light turned on when that switch was flipped. Suddenly, our lives transformed, instead of getting firewood from the woods, we could use a rice cooker. Instead of walking several miles to convey a message, the telephone could perform the magic.
๐ My Heroes & Inspirations
With more free time (thanks to electrical appliances reducing our chores!), I dove into reading about the people who made this modern life possible:
- Kwame Nkrumah - The visionary who led Ghana to independence and pursued African Unity
- Alexander the Great - The young conqueror who built an empire across three continents
- Alan Turing - The codebreaker who pioneered computing and broke Enigma helping the Allies to victory
- Thomas Edison - The inventor who brought light to the world
- The Wright Brothers - Who made humans fly
- Nikola Tesla - The genius of alternating current
- Albert Einstein - Who revolutionized physics
- Henry Ford - Who made transportation accessible
- Alexander Graham Bell - My favorite! He created the telephone and facilitated information exchange on a scale that would seem impossible to generations before him
Bell especially inspired me because of the telephone โ first because it was cool, then because of the convenience it provided. He transformed the lives of everyone after him. Because of his inspiration, I became extremely interested in communication systems, starting with radio and expanding to cryptography techniques.
๐ฏ The Decision That Shaped My Future
In 2007, the world felt the tremors of the global financial crisis. As the saying goes, "When America sneezes, the world catches a cold," and Africa, particularly Ghana, was hit hard. My family felt the vibrations deeply, our small town already grappling with limited resources, faced new struggles as economic ripples disrupted local markets and opportunities. Watching my parents navigate those challenges, I realized how vulnerable we were to crises beyond our control. It was a defining moment: I vowed never to let my family be at the mercy of forces outside our doing.
Inspired by the great figures of history's men like Kwame Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence, and Alexander Graham Bell, who revolutionized communication, I dreamed of becoming a transformative figure myself. I decided to take life seriously, channeling my energy into science, the foundation of progress. With unwavering determination, I worked tirelessly to excel in my studies, earning a coveted spot to study science at Presbyterian Boys Senior High School in Accra, Ghanaโs premier High school, where my passion for discovery took root.
That dedication carried me to All Nations University, where I pursued Electronics and Communications Engineering. My goal was clear: to master the technology that powers the modern world and shape a future where my family and others like us could thrive, insulated from global shocks. My hard work paid off when I graduated with first-class Summa cum laude honors, becoming an Outstanding Student. Beyond academics, I served as Chief Justice of the Student Representative Council, balancing leadership, sports, and my studies, driven by the vision of creating a legacy as enduring as the great men of old.
Then i set my sight on lands beyond the sees to go out into the world, patiently learn then conquer.
๐ก My Mission Today
That little boy who was amazed by electricity in 2008 has grown into an engineer working on cutting-edge technology : from autonomous drones to sustainable battery solutions for mining. But I never forget where I came from and what inspired me.
Today, I'm not just creating technology; I'm also teaching the next generation, volunteering in my community, and trying to be the kind of inspiration for others that Thomas Edison, Tesla, and Alexander Graham Bell were for me.
